Avoid walking on new turf for at least two to three weeks after installation to allow the grass to establish strong roots. Foot traffic during this period can disturb the turf and damage the developing root system. Once the turf is firmly rooted you can gradually begin to use the lawn. To check if your turf is established gently tug on the grass. If it resists and feels anchored it’s safe to walk on.

After installing turf, water it thoroughly and keep it moist for the first few weeks to establish roots. Avoid mowing until the grass has rooted firmly, which usually takes two to three weeks. When you start mowing, set the mower blades high and gradually lower them as the turf strengthens. Fertilise the lawn after about six weeks to promote growth. The ideal mowing height for turf depends on the type of grass, but generally, most grasses should be kept between 2.5 to 5 cm high. Buffalo and Kikuyu grasses can be kept slightly higher at around 5 to 7 cm to maintain their health and appearance. Mowing too low can stress the grass and expose the soil to weeds. Regular mowing promotes a denser lawn, but it’s important not to cut more than one-third of the grass height in a single mow.
